My roof is sexy. Now. After American Roofing & Waterproofing replaced the entire roof on top of my garage. I learned a great deal from the process. Full disclosure: American Roofing & Waterproofing is a Knoodle client, but that is not why I am writing this. I have become a fan of their work.
What I learned about roofs:
#1) Never ask a non-roofing professional to fix your roof.
In an effort to save money, I had a handyman add a deck to our flat roof over my garage. He built a wooden deck, complete with nails and stained it to match the house. It was fine for a while. Well, until it started to rain. And once it rained, it started to leak into the garage. Sheets of dry wall started raining down on our cars. Obviously, there was a problem.
#2) Never put a wooden deck on a roof.
Now I know. Neither my handyman, my husband nor I knew BUT American Roofing & Waterproofing knew. And they fixed it by replacing the roof, rebuilding it from the inside and covering it with a beautiful, sandy, roof that can be used as a rooftop patio. It works with all the essentials: furniture, dogs and high heels. So, you see, my roof is sexy and it adds another 400 feet of outdoor usable space. It’s so beautiful, I sometimes sleep on it. Or enjoy a cold beverage while watching the sunset. The sandy finish is clean and beautiful, it will last a lifetime and it taught me a lesson. And yes, I did pay for the roof. It was worth the money but boy, it was an expensive lesson.
#3) Trust is earned.
In an age where it’s hard to trust anyone one on a major job, I managed to find a team of people that were committed, on time and on budget. The owner, Kirk Mannor, stopped by personally to make sure the work met his standards. I love when the person I hire is a perfectionist!
