The Arizona-based roofing team takes the lead in this construction competition benefitting U.S. veterans

Habitat for Humanity of Central Arizona recently presented the 2022 Golden Hammer Award to American Roofing & Waterproofing Founder and CEO Kirk Mannor and his team. The contest provided roofs on the homes of U.S. veterans through the U.S. Vets Program. The race began with two teams consisting of two skilled roofers and two students, and was judged on safety, teamwork, workmanship and speed.

Students were selected to be on a team by drawing names from a hat so that participants would be completely chosen at random. From there, the teams were asked to don their harnesses and pass a quick inspection by a certified professional. The clock started during inspections and the race to a brand new roof began!

The teams got ready to get on the roof and start working after they had been cleared. They first installed the base and flashings, and that time was recorded. Judges went back and forth checking on craftsmanship, safety and giving input on the projects.
Henry Staggs, roofing contractor, National Center for Construction Education & Research (NCCER) master trainer and judge of the philanthropic contest was thoroughly impressed with the work of Kirk Mannor and the contractors from American Roofing & Waterproofing.

“They’re good guys, they want to do the job right no matter what,” said Staggs. “I’ve always been impressed with Kirk and his guys’ work. They took my critiques seriously and were open to listening to my opinions.”

After the base and flashing were completed, the teams moved right into the shingle portion of the job, with the same judges evaluating the work. The winner was chosen based on which roofing team had the fastest time and the least amount of mistakes. That’s when American Roofing & Waterproofing took home the gold!

“I was blown away that the houses got done in one day,” said Staggs. “These roofers came out for a great cause and did not disappoint.”

Habitat for Humanity of Central Arizona and the U.S. Vets program thanked participants for their hard work and were grateful for their help and willingness to give back to some very deserving veterans.
